Measure the cable jacket, not the wires inside it. Each gland size grips a range of jacket diameters, and our cable gland size chart lists the range for all five.
A kit is the better buy when you are fitting out a new enclosure and do not know every cable yet. Single sizes are cheaper once you do.
You tighten the cap by hand and finish with a wrench. When it clicks, the seal has closed on the jacket, and if you pull the cable it should not move.
